Reflecting on today's Gospel - Storing up Heavenly Treasures with Love

Posted on June 21, 2013 at 10:39 AM
Reflecting on today’s Gospel:

In today’s Gospel we are told to avoid storing up treasures on earth, where they can be lost or stolen, or even decay; rather, we are encouraged to store up treasures in Heaven, where our treasure will be safe.

But how do we store up treasure in Heaven?  It’s really quite simple: do as Jesus tells us.  Love one another and store up treasures in Heaven.  Forgive one another and store up treasures in Heaven.  Be humble and store up treasures in Heaven.  Spread the joy of Christ and store up treasures in Heaven.

All that we do here on earth is known to the Father and it is He, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who will be our judge on the last day.  He will decide what treasures we are entitled to.  While it is certainly nice to have a trove of possessions here on earth, we must remember that our time here is short.  Our time in Heaven, however, is eternal.  Storing up our Heavenly treasures by doing good deeds here on earth will bring an eternal reward, the like of which we cannot comprehend here on earth.

As St John of the Cross said, “At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love.”
